Position Overview
The Major Gifts Officer reports to the Executive Director & Chief Global Development Officer. They work to advance the work of EARTH University through the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. They are responsible for developing, expanding, and maintaining a portfolio of major gift prospects who can make six- and seven-figure investments.
This is a remote position that will require travel to visit with donors and prospects as needed, as well as to spend time at EARTH’s campuses in Costa Rica.
Essential Functions
- Discover, cultivate, and solicit major gift prospects and donors capable of making $100K+ and $1M+ gifts.
- Create a comprehensive strategy for donor cultivation, solicitation, and retention based on the donor’s giving history and capacity.
- Develop and manage a portfolio size of ~50-75 current and/or prospective donors, including high-net worth individuals, corporate, and foundation prospects.
- Create proposals and other collateral material to support major gift solicitations.
- Develop budget-related revenue projections and subsequently measure and report actual performance during the year.
- Partner with senior staff and/or volunteers on solicitations by providing prospect briefings, strategic guidance, and assistance with donor communications.
- Develop a high-quality donor experience through regular personalized correspondence, professional proposals, and timely acknowledgements.
- Track prospect activity by maintaining regular reports that accurately reflect progress toward building relationships and increasing donor support.
- Exercise ethical judgement and maintain the highest standards of donor privacy and confidence.
Qualifications and Experience
- 5-10 years of fundraising experience, with a preference for expertise in environmental sector as well as experience navigating complex organizations.
- A strong record of achievement as a major gift fundraiser, including the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors, ideally at $100K+ and $1M+ level.
- Knowledge of the philanthropic landscape related to climate change, biodiversity, and food systems.
- A commitment to the mission and ideals of EARTH University and the ability to articulate its vision and programs in a compelling manner.
- Proficiency in Spanish is desirable.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability and desire to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and to promote a positive working environment, a spirit of cooperation, and the necessary flexibility to manage change.
- Experience working with Raiser’s Edge (preferred).
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, including regular trips to EARTH University in Costa Rica.
- Multi-cultural experience and an appreciation for a global society.
- High emotional intelligence and sense of humor.
